Haywood L. Perry Jr.
Haywood Perry has been a professional dog trainer for 40 years. His family adopted a German Shepherd when he was 5 years old… he has never been without one since. He learned obedience training under the tutelage of an Air Force K-9 trainer. He worked as a Veterinary technician, and then worked for several other trainers before going out on his own.
Haywood opened his first school, Friendship Academy for Dogs, in 1985 and developed a unique training program that would succeed for both owner and pet. Pet supplies and grooming services were offered as well. In 1989, he opened Manor West Kennels, a commercial boarding facility in Accokeek, Maryland, which allowed him to broaden the relationship between his clients and their pets as extended family.
The vision grew in 1994 when he and his wife, Dr. Adrienne Edwards, a veterinarian, opened The Pet Depot, a one stop pet care center in Silver Spring, Maryland. This facility offered a full complement of services from veterinary care, training and behavioral consultations, grooming, and boarding, to the sale of premium pet food and supplies. He also developed Continuing Education for Pet Professionals (CEPP) which hosted trainers, behaviorists, and groomers from around the world to provide seminars designed to keep pet professionals current in state-of-the-art techniques.
Haywood has attended numerous continuing educational conferences in the pet-related fields emphasizing behavior, training techniques, and grooming. He incorporates this knowledge in developing the best approach to training each dog based on his/her individual needs. He has attended APDT, IACP conferences since 1998. He participated as a panelist speaker at the APDT conference in 2001. He currently serves as a consultant to the Pet Care Industry. His focus is on working with trainers in developing or fine tuning training programs, as well as with boarding & grooming facilities to streamline operations and enhance program development.
Haywood has been devoted to Schutzhund Training as a hobby since becoming a member of the Greater Washington DC Schutzhund Group in 1988. He has served on the Board of directors and as Training Director during his tenure with the club.
